All I Asking For Is My Body, Part I, Dialogue

The narrator of "All I asking for is my body" is Kiyoshi Oyama a fourth grader. If I can still remember Kiyoshi would be about nine years old. Kiyoshi is not the only name he goes by in the book, he also goes by Kiyo-chan and Kyo. As to where Kiyoshi lives and where the book takes places is Pepelau, Hawaii. Which does not seem to be a actual place as I just put into Google and came up with classmate's blogs and wedding dresses.

As for what Kiyoshi's parents do as a living his father is a fisherman and his mother stays at home making kimonos. As stated in the book Kiyoshi's father is a fisherman and everyday brings home the best fish caught for dinner. Which is something you can get sick of according to Kiyoshi if you have three times a day, but to me that sounds pretty good. While Kiyoshi's mother sews kimonos by hand they never looked like Makoto-san's mother kimonos as Kiyoshi points out. While the other main point made by Kiyoshi's parents is the father makes the money and in Makoto-san's family the mother makes the money. I'm going to guess this comes into play later in the book.

Rules for Writes Chapter 63

A chapter about the basics of sentences and the patterns of sentences. Here is something I have not gone over in who knows how long and something I needed to go over again. Has many examples with sentence patterns with subject, linking verbs, subject complement, transitive verb, direct object, indirect object, object complement, and intransitive verb all in it. Helping you identify subjects and verbs in the sentence. With all terms I listed before the chapter explains them and gives examples and practice sentence to use. With the end of the chapter talking about transformations of sentence from present/active to past/passive. While in the chapter there are little notes about thing writers make mistakes on that sometime you might now see. So, the notes are there to help you remember and know to look for them like using a past voice when a present voice would be better.

This is a chapter I definitively needed to read and be reminded again because it has been so look since learning and going over. I really can't remember the last time I went over sentence structure and totally forgot most of it. After going over it again it all came back again, so it is somewhere in my mind. This chapter will help me not make so many fragment sentences while typing my essays, now remembering sentence structure. The other great thing I was reminded of, past and present voices in papers. Past and present voices are something I know I need to work on in my papers. Hopefully with more reading and practice writing this will become much better.

Roles of Forgiveness

Smoke Signals a movie we all have seen about two Native American’s journey to Arizona. On the way to Arizona and back Thomas Builds-the-Fire and Victor Joseph show all kinds of emotion, but one emotion stands out from the rest, forgiveness. Forgiveness plays an important and huge role in Smoke Signals from seeing characters grow to moving the story along. Starting with Thomas Builds-the-Fire the local storyteller, who mixes fact with fiction to make his stories.

Thomas a person who loves to tell stories but not everyone wants to listen especially when they are the same and are not quite true, which never stops Thomas from telling stories or what’s on his mind. This characteristic of telling what’s on his mind gets Thomas into trouble with Victor. Thomas always tells Victor what is on his mind, which gets Victor mad ending up in Thomas getting hurt. Even though this happen Thomas still sees Victor as a friend because he forgives Victor for his actions. The reason for the forgiveness is Thomas understands Victor and knows they both have had hard lives. This forgiveness Thomas has also goes for Arnold Victor’s father, Arnold who killed Thomas’s parents. Even something so terrible Thomas forgives Arnold and still sees him as a father figure and good person unlike Victor.

Victor the tough Native American, a character who is affected the most by the role forgiveness plays in the movie. Most importantly with his father Arnold, Victor does not see Arnold as his father anymore when Arnold leaves the reservation. When Arnold leaves the only events Victor remembers of Arnold are the unpleasant ones. Victor really shows that he does not like Arnold even to the point of hating everything about Arnold. This of course changes on the journey to and from Arizona with the help of forgiving a form of forgiveness. Victor comes to terms with Arnold in the end forgiving what Arnold for what he had done.

Victor’s enlightenment coming mainly from Suzy retelling Arnold’s happy memories from the reservation. Suzy helps Victor see that Arnold was trying to get forgiveness from the people he had hurt. This all comes full circle when Suzy reveals Arnold as the person who set the fire many years ago. Something Victor had no idea of as well as the reservation. With this news Victor is able to come closer to understand Arnold’s actions. Forgiveness is finally achieved by Arnold from Victor as Victor comes closer to understanding him. This in turn Thomas, who has always had forgiveness for Victor, is finally return back. Thomas the person who always initiated the conversation between him and Victor is repaid by the role forgiveness plays on Victor. Victor the person, who was always a bit mean or more to Thomas, shows Thomas a kinder side of himself; by giving Thomas some of Arnold’s ashes. This is done in part the forgiveness Victor finds with Arnold and Thomas being a friend. With roles of forgiveness played out by main characters, the story it self has forgiveness woven in.

Smoke Signals base story has forgiveness written in. A great example would be Suzy burning Arnold’s trailer at the same time at the same time Arnold’s pickup roars to life for Victor. This symbolizes Victor forgiving Arnold and knowing Arnold did care for him. This is one of many examples in Smoke Signals were forgiveness is not far off if not already there. So you can be sure there are many roles of forgiveness in Smoke Signal.

Writing About Film

Writing about film is something I thought I had down pretty well. According to this is website I am not even as close as I thought. The reason is I add in my feelings or thoughts into my writing about film, while the website said try to hold off a little on the "I". Other things in the website were different types of film writing and how to do them. Other great tools the website has is film lingo and tips on how to write about film. For example the website has what looks like all terms used in film making and what not like the different camera shots and lighting words.
As to how I will use this new information is in my essay 3 for this week. The tips written at the end of the article will be something I will continue to look at. With knowing how to write more about film essay 3 will hopefully be easier to write. Now on to the hard part to start essay 3 now with new information.

Are you more impressed with the film or the story? Why?

I must say that I am more impressed with the film than the story. Usually it is the other way around, I enjoy the story more than the film. The reason for this change is most likely due to the fact that I watched the film first before reading the story. When I read the book than watch the film I can see all the parts they left out. Which for me takes away from the story and all the different feelings you had while reading the book. When the book comes to the big screen you sometimes do not get all of the feelings, you got from the book.

The other reason for enjoying the film more than the book is how the characters are portrayed. In the movie Thomas and Victor are shown as never really having a relationship with each other until the adventure. While in the story Thomas and Victor are shown to have a relationship with each other until a few years earlier and their adventure does not seem to do anything. This again could be me just enjoying happy ends. Cause who does not like a happy ending at the end of the day.

What do you think about the relationship between Thomas and Victor?

The relationship of Thomas and Victor is a strange one at best. Throughout the movie you see Thomas treated not so nice by Victor, a reoccurring theme in Thomas's life. Something that stands out between Thomas and Victor is Thomas always starts the conversation and Victor never does. Which is why their relationship is a bit strange. They will talk to each other and have a friendship but Victor does not see Thomas in the same way Thomas sees Victor. This all changes when they start their adventure to Arizona.

As they travel to Arizona and back you see their friendship grow as well as themselves. Thomas "grows up" according to Victor and becomes a equal in Victor eyes while traveling. While Victor comes to past with his father and becomes friendly to Thomas. With the start of the movie Thomas and Victor seem to be miles apart from one another. As their adventure comes to an end Thomas and Victor's relationship strengthen and the miles apart from each other shorten.
