Week 1 Introduction

My name is Haruki Yee and I'm 19 years old. Things you should know about me is I'm a marital arts instructor in Terra Linda and terrible at writing as you will soon find out. As for my educational goals is to find out if I should continue teaching martial arts and turn it into a life long job or go into a science major. This question is sorta the reason for taking this class with it being online I only to be in a classroom two days a week (Very Nice).
As for the best way for me to learn it would be a blend of visual and kinesthetic learning. For the type of student I am it would be a last second type. Doing my school work and homework usually gets done a day or two before due date. So if I pace or do work early that would be a big NO, something I hope to change this semester.

  1. Hi Haruki,

What kind of martial art do you teach? It seems like you're considering two great careers.

Have you thought about taking a counseling course? Some of the courses help students explore career interests. A few of my former students decided on their education and career plans after taking a counseling course.

I'm looking forward to working with you this semester.

    Take care,
    Lauren

  2. Haruki,

That's pretty interesting that you're a marital arts instructor, I have never tried it myself, but I do appreciate any kind of physically challenging sport. I don't know that martial arts is a sport, but I can't think of any other way to describe it. I think that you're faced with a tough decision. There's a difference between doing an activity that you enjoy during your free time and pursuing it as a career. I hope that you receive some enlightenment on the matter. Don't pressure yourself into making a decision though, it's an important decision.

I look forward to reading your future posts even though you claim that you're a poor writer. Maybe you just need to refine your skills. I used to be amateur at best when it came to writing, but it all comes down to practice and constructive criticism!

  3. Hi Haruki,
that's really cool that you teach martial arts. My son is five years old and he loves martial arts. If it's something you love doing, you should continue to persue it. I believe anything you teach to others, you learn for yourself as well.
It is always nice to improve in English reading and writing. I believe that is what we all want and why we're here.

    Take care and good luck,
    Susie

  4. Hello Haruki,
You are just 19 and already an instructor, that's a great thing. I use to take some martial art class specially judo back in my school days but could not continue. There weren't any demand for martial students in Nepal those days so I did not even got a chance to look at martial art as my career.
Lastly, just want to wish you a luck with your martial art carer and studies.

  5. Hello Haruki,
Martial arts are great for the mind and body as long as you take care of yourself. What kind do you teach? I have taken a year of Judo and a year of Shotokan Karate but that was ages ago. This summer I plan On taking Krav Maga which should be a great challenge. An instructor at age 19??? Wow you must be a great teacher and student. I wish you well in your journey through life and hope to talk to you soon and by the way your writing seems very good so don't underestimate yourself.

  6. Hi Hauki,
I cant believe your an instructor and your only 19!? how crazy is that. Well I hope you are able to figure out what you want to do for most of your life. I can relate to you and not pacing, because i used to be the same way and trust me it goes away sooner or later. Mine did. i used to want to take a martial arts class but i always figured i wasn't going to be good at it. I've only done like school sports like soccer and cheerleading. But Martial arts is something different and unique. That's great!
Keep going and don't become inpatient you'll find out what's best for you soon enough!

  7. Everyone,

It looks like I should have added what type of martial arts I teach. It is Freestyle Martial Arts has lot of Jiu-Jistu, little boxing, Muay Thai, and a splash of Wresting and Judo. You could think of the UFC as an example of Freestyle Martial Arts without all the blood and aimed towards kids and adults.

  8. Hello Haruki ! Welcome to English 100, Don’t worry about your writing skills, a good writer is only made with practice! Lauren’s freewrites and exercises will help you a lot! Don’t leave homework for the last minute, remember that a good essay needs to be proof read a couple of times. I wish you the best in this class!
