“Shooting Dad” Dialogue

What accounts for the narrator’s struggles with her dad?

Sarah and her dad's struggles come from being to very different people. While Sarah being a democrat and enjoying art and music. Her dad being a republican and enjoying guns. You could say there are on different sides of light spectrum. This started when Sarah first fired her first gun at age six with her twin sister.

Sarah's reaction was not for her, while her twin's reaction was totally for her. This event triggered Sarah's not understanding of her father's interest in guns. Next difference would be their hobbies. Sarah enjoying art and music and her father being a gunsmith. Leading to having their own sides of the house, one for music and art other for guns. These differences led to their struggles but in the end Sarah found that they are very similar. "We're both smart-alecky loners with goody projects and wired equipment." (439)

  1. Haruki,
Yes Sarah did struggle with her father a lot because of their differences. She liked arts and music, while he liked guns because he was also a gunsmith. I can't imagine how Sarah could have grown so different from her family even though she was surrounded by guns all her life.
I grew up with my father being a hunter, carrying shotguns, rifles, and handguns. It never worried me even if it was stashed all over the house.

  2. You have a very great response to the story. It's short but outlines all the important areas. It's pretty cool how different our perscpectives of things change so much form childhood to adulthood. I can relate to her in many forms of being completely different than her father. I am glad she stood up for what she believed in rather than just pretending she liked guns and such to please her dad. A lot of kids just want to be accepted these days so it was cool to see her fight for her beliefs.

  3. As I grew up hunting and fishing was something very common for my family. But when I reading this story and how guns seemed to be in every room and just lying around my first response was my goodness what about the children. Being the age of six and holding a gun even in my family where it was second nature to have a rifle would never happen. I could see why Sarah had such a bad reaction to guns the firing something so powerful at such a young age could be pretty traumatizing.
I’m glad thought as she grew older she seem to find some common ground between her and her father.

  4. I agree with you on the reasons why Sarah and her dad didn't get along when she was growing up. I think that if he hadn't handed her a gun at age 6 things may have been different. I can't help but think, who gives a 6 year old a gun?

  5. All of what you mentioned were struggles that Sarah had with her dad. She also struggled with political issues with her dad. She knew at a young age the person she was and fought for her beliefs. I'm glad she did get a chance to bond with her dad and to find out she had a little of her dad in her after all.
