Smoke Signals, the movie Dialogue

What do you think about the relationship between Thomas and Victor?

The relationship of Thomas and Victor is a strange one at best. Throughout the movie you see Thomas treated not so nice by Victor, a reoccurring theme in Thomas's life. Something that stands out between Thomas and Victor is Thomas always starts the conversation and Victor never does. Which is why their relationship is a bit strange. They will talk to each other and have a friendship but Victor does not see Thomas in the same way Thomas sees Victor. This all changes when they start their adventure to Arizona.

As they travel to Arizona and back you see their friendship grow as well as themselves. Thomas "grows up" according to Victor and becomes a equal in Victor eyes while traveling. While Victor comes to past with his father and becomes friendly to Thomas. With the start of the movie Thomas and Victor seem to be miles apart from one another. As their adventure comes to an end Thomas and Victor's relationship strengthen and the miles apart from each other shorten.

  1. After reading your post I realize too that in the conversation between Thomas and Victor, Thomas was the one who always starts it. May be Victor was not appertaining that Thomas joined him in his trip to collect his father’s ashes. Even though Victor shows the sign of dislike towards Thomas, Thomas was always fond of Victor. Even after learning that it was Victor’s father whose carelessness cost Thomas parents’ life, he did not hate Victor or his father. As far as I believe it is due to calm nature and being able to forgive others Thomas was the reason for the growing friendship with Victor.

  2. Hello,

I also agree with you. Thomas and Victor seemed to be "miles apart" at the beginning of the movie, even though the grew up together. The trip to Arizona ended up being good for the both of them and drew them closer together. They closed the gap and maybe some slight resentment that had been there all these years.

  3. Hi Haruki,
I have to agree with you Thomas and Victor could not have been more different. I think Thomas like everyone did not understand why Victor acted the way he did but I love that Thomas never gave up on the relationship. I think Victor need a person in his life Thomas someone who was willing to stick around no matter what. I think that their trip to Arizona showed that. I agree with you that at the end of their adventure together relationship had taken a turn for the better they had learned to lean on one another and in the end that is really what they both needed.

  4. Haruki,

You made two really good points that I didn't really think about. Victor never did start the conversation it was always Thomas who wanted to talk. If it was up to Victor they probably wouldn't speak at all his voice left with his father maybe. The other good point you made was that Victor grew up at the end when he realized things were the way they were for a reason and he came to terms with the fact that his dad was a father to Thomas as well.

  5. Thomas and Victor's relationship is a strange one indeed. But I completely agree with your insights about the way they changed as the movie went on. GOing to Arizona was definitely the best thing that could've happened to these two. They definitely learned a lot about one another and realized it was each other that they needed to be happy in life. Toward the end of the movie their relationship grew very strong and it definitely would have not been that strong if Thomas had not insisted on going to Arizona.

  6. Haruki,
I like how you described both Thomas and Victor's relations as being miles apart, and as they got closer and understood each other more, their distance in miles became shorter. Sometimes it takes a long journey to reach an understanding between two people. And an excited adventure at that. I thought their relationship between those to was strange at first also but it went from a strange relationship to a unique friendship.

  7. I really liked how you compared both characters and their friendship. I was confused to find out if they were just friends or cousins? I thought at the beginning of the movie of them referring to themselves as cousins but I may be wrong. Usually, spending more time with someone and taking the time to get to know them can really make you understand everything about them and if they will be a really good friend or not. Thomas showed this by giving the money to Victor in the first place in order to go get his father.

  8. Hi ! I think you are right by saying that the trip made the main characters grow. Victor learned how to appreciate Thomas and give him the respect that he deserved. Victor realized that Thomas was actually a nice person and was always trying to see life in a positive way. The journey brings them together and they both learn how to get along. You did a great job describing their relationship !
