Are you more impressed with the film or the story? Why?
I must say that I am more impressed with the film than the story. Usually it is the other way around, I enjoy the story more than the film. The reason for this change is most likely due to the fact that I watched the film first before reading the story. When I read the book than watch the film I can see all the parts they left out. Which for me takes away from the story and all the different feelings you had while reading the book. When the book comes to the big screen you sometimes do not get all of the feelings, you got from the book.
The other reason for enjoying the film more than the book is how the characters are portrayed. In the movie Thomas and Victor are shown as never really having a relationship with each other until the adventure. While in the story Thomas and Victor are shown to have a relationship with each other until a few years earlier and their adventure does not seem to do anything. This again could be me just enjoying happy ends. Cause who does not like a happy ending at the end of the day.
Hi Haruki,
ReplyDeleteYou raise a great point; usually we prefer the story over the film because we tend to read the story first. The main reason I asked the class to view Smoke Signals first is because it's a great example of a revision. The story is just a draft for the film. Alexie does a global revision on the text to better meet the expectations of the audience.
You're right that usually a film has cut out sections of the book for the sake of time. In this case, because the story is short, Alexie was able to add characters and scenes; it's the story that's the abbreviated version.
Thanks for your ideas.
Take care,
Lauren
Hi Haruki,
ReplyDeleteSo funny that you enjoyed the film more than the story. I usually do but this time I enjoyed the story more. I believe it's for the simple fact that in the story I think that Victor and Thomas had a much better relationship.
It seems that eveyone else in the class enjoyed the film more than the book. I guess I am one of the only ones. But, I as I said, I believe it's because I felt their relationship more in the story than the film. Their relationship is definitely different in the book versus the movie.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Dina
Haruki,
ReplyDeleteI agree with in your first paragraph. I too liked the movie better than the written version. The movie showed more than the written story. Also without the movie I would be confused from reading the book from the past and present shifting in the stories.
Haruki,
ReplyDeleteYou totally brought up a good point that I never really thought about. If you read a story and watch the movie you usually read the book first. This made for an interesting read because I could put actual faces to the characters in the written story.
